Abstract: Corpus Approaches to Social Science (CASS) at Lancaster University is an ES-RC-supported centre designed to bring a new method to the study of language – the corpus approach – and to apply it to a range of social sciences. In the past few years, CASS has conducted a considerable number of projects, such as British National Corpus: Second Data Analysis; Big Data Media Analysis and the Representation of Urban Violence in Brazil; Changing Climates; Comparable and Parallel Corpus Approaches to the Third Code; Discourse of Online Misogyny (DOOM); Distressed Communities: Perception and Reality; Hate Speech; Language Development, Disorders and Environment; Newspapers, Poverty and Long-term Change; Religion, Citizenship and Integration; Spoken BNC2014; Spoken Learner Corpus (SLC) Project; Understanding Corporate Communications and Written BNC2014. This initiative has provided new perspectives for the study of other disciplines in which language matters, and has achieved much fruitful work. For their excellence, innovation, impact and benefit to the institution itself and to society generally in the wider world, CASS was awarded The Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2015.

Yufang Qian is a Professor and Head of the Research Centre for Discourse and Communications, Zhejiang University of Media and Communications. Her research interests include discourse studies, discourse communication and corpus linguistics. Her book, Discursive Constructions around Terrorism in The People’s Daily and The Sun before and after 9/11, won the National Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Social Science. She has published a series of journal articles on corpus-based media discourse analysis. She has completed two Ministry of Education Social Science Projects and is currently directing one China National Social Science Foundation Project.
