Abstract: Starting from the Chinese translation of the term ‘transcultural’, this article responds to SHEN Qi’s commentary on Shuo Yu’s former long articles (published in two parts) on transculturality with a case study on China– Europe encounters. She summarizes the status quo of the translation and studies of the prefixes ‘inter’, ‘cross-’ and ‘trans-’ and introduces transcultural study achievements in anthropology, sinology and Latin American literature. In view of the paradox of accelerated globalization and the return of nationalism and communitarianism, and of living in a transcultural reality but refusing to accept it, the author proposes three specific suggestions with regard to constructing transcultural knowledge.

Keywords: transculturality, common knowledge construction, human identity, community of destiny

Shuo Yu 于硕 is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies and Director of the China Europa Centre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She taught at Renmin University of China before going to France in the early 1990s and lived there for more than 20 years while studying and teaching transcultural anthropology. She applied Edgar Morin’s complex thinking (pensée complexe) to her transcultural operation of Europe–China dialogue and put forward a theory of cross-fields (champs croisés) of three China–Europe encounters. She was a co-found- er of the China–Europa Forum and served as its first Coordinator General.
