Abstract：This comments present the author’s views from the cross-cultural to the transcultural approach, multidisciplinarity to transdisciplinarity. He believes : ‘The transcultural approach is not simply an academic approach, but a cultural attitude or cultural world view, holistically and systematically covering four layers: objective (transcultural value orientation), norm (reconstruction of ethical rites), practicality (governance of world society) and experience (recognition of the generativity of the only human community), thereby featuring a transdisciplinary perspective rather than cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary ones. The transcultural approach could contribute theoretically and intellectually to cultural images of contemporary China in the world and China–Europe cultural exchanges and contribute spiritually and practically to world peace governance.’
SHEN Qi 沈骑 is an associate professor in applied linguistics at the Institute of Linguistic Studies, Shanghai International Studies University, and Deputy Director of the China Research Center for Foreign Language Strategies (RCFLS). Dr Shen’s major research interests include language policy and language planning, sociology of language, educational linguistics and comparative education. He has incorporated political, cultural and social perspectives into language education policy studies in China and compared foreign language education policies among East Asian countries through an innovative analytical framework of process, content and value dimensions. Currently, he is trying to adopt a transdisciplinary approach to educational linguistics.
